More than 63,000 returnees and refugees get assistance

The South Sudan Red Cross has given assistance to 63,978 people who escaped the fighting in Sudan and entered South Sudan from April to Semtember 2023. The locations where distribution of food, essential household items and cash were given include Aweil, Kuajok, Bentiu, Raja, Maban, Malakal, Wau, Kodok, Renk.

Abuk Lino Lual, a mother of 4 who got essential household items expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the South Sudan Red Cross for the impactful support. She recounted the hardships her family went through, enduring heavy rain while sleeping under makeshift shelters made of cartons and torn plastic sheets. “The provision of these items brought immense relief to me and my children.” Abuk said.

In Bentiu, a returnee Nyadak Chuol who is a mother of 3 narrated her ordeal. “We fled the war in Sudan with bare hands, leaving behind everything due to the situation in Khartoum and other cities. The items that we received can give us some hope. With these items from the South Sudan Red Cross, we can now be able to erect our own shelters with plastic sheets and the rain will not beat us again” said Nyadak. 

A 37-years-old Ali Abakar Muhamed Osman, chief of the refugees in Diem-Ziber, Raja in Western Bahr el Ghazal said they has faced difficult situation in Central Africa Republic. “We came from Bambuti area, it took us 26 days to reach here.  We faced a lot of problems and fighting.  He said that majority of the refugees were women and children and with the items distributed, they will sleep and eat well for a period of time.
